Unlocking Kingston’s Potential: A Strategic Investment in Infrastructure

The recent announcement by the Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) regarding the significant investment in Kingston’s three waters infrastructure marks a pivotal moment in the region’s development.

This investment is not just about upgrading essential services; it’s a strategic move to unlock more land for housing, addressing the critical need for residential growth in the area.

The seeds of this development were sown back in 2018 when Rationale, working alongside QLDC, developed a detailed business case to submit to Government as part of the Housing Infrastructure Fund (HIF). The evidence-based approach demonstrated in the business case has directly contributed to the success of the QLDC application, ensuring that Kingston can evolve into a thriving community ready to meet the housing demands of the district.

The journey to this point has been a collaborative effort involving multiple stakeholders. Supported by Rationale, QLDC worked closely with Kingston Village Ltd and other key players to develop a robust plan that aligned with the HIF’s objectives and the district’s growth strategy.

The strategic alignment of the project with existing policies and the clear articulation of community benefits were crucial in securing funding. The business case highlighted the challenges of rapid growth across the district and the need for investment in infrastructure to support housing development. It presented Kingston as part of the solution for delivering more houses faster, addressing the region’s housing supply head-on.

The vision for Kingston is one of sustainability and resilience. The three waters investment will provide the necessary infrastructure to support new housing developments, ensuring that the community has access to safe drinking water, efficient wastewater management, and reliable stormwater systems. This infrastructure is the backbone of any thriving community, and its development in Kingston is a significant step towards realising the area’s full potential.

As we look to the future, the Kingston three waters investment is more than just pipes and treatment plants; it’s about laying the foundation for a successful community. It’s a story of strategic planning, collaboration, and a commitment to enhancing the quality of life for residents and future generations.
